Meet Herb Orrell

“When you sit with people by their death beds, help negotiate a truce to their domestic violence at 2:00 a.m.; when you listen to the grisly details of rape, incest, abuse, or other violence they have suffered; when you pray with them over a dying child in the intensive care ward; when you bury their loved ones, you hear things others dont hear.”

~ Herb Orrell, Unspeakable: The Truth About Grief

Herb Orrell, author of the ground-breaking new book Unspeakable: The Truth About Grief, has been “hearing things others don't hear” ever since he found his calling in ministry. During his years serving the church, Orrell was often first on the scene, hearing and seeing what happened before the police were called, before any doctor delivered news and before individuals had time to gain their composure. After seeing, firsthand, the many faces of grief, he decided to share the truth with the world.

Orrell grew up on the shores of Long Island, New York, dividing his time between surfing and private parochial school. He attended college as a pre-law major, but left in his senior year to work as a salesman for a music company. His love for music resulted in the opening of his own music store in Doylestown, Pennsylvania where he sold instruments and pursued his passion for classical guitar.

Following a 10-year absence from formal worship, Herb attended a Methodist church one Sunday morning in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was so greatly moved by the sermon that he decided to fulfill his calling and enter the ministry. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and then went on to graduate school at Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey.

Upon graduation, Orrell was offered a position with the New York City Council of Churches in the Public Relations Department, but decided instead to accept an appointment as the pastor of a small church in rural New Mexico.

For the next 10 years, Herb served churches of all sizes throughout the southwest. In 1994, he took a leave of absence from the ministry to write Unspeakable.

Orrell lives with his family in Houston, Texas where works as an author and marketing writer.
